Sister M. Eleanor Volpe, O.C.S.O., who served as a contemplative in prayer, died March 15. She was 78.

Sister Eleanor was a member of the Cistercian Nuns of the Strict Observance, entering that community in 1977 and professing final vows in 1982.

She earlier entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1957 and professed final vows in 1966. She was serving as a missionary in South Korea when she felt called to a life of prayer. She entered the cloister of Maryknoll, and after five years, it became clear to her and her superiors that she was called to a more monastic form of contemplative prayer.

Born in Bronxville, she was raised in Tuckahoe. She is survived by four sisters, Anne Verderame, Grace Salvatore, Jeanne Serini and Edythe Provenzano.

A Funeral Mass was offered March 23 at Mount St. Mary Abbey in Wrentham, Mass. Her nephew, Father Tom Provenzano, O.S.D.B., was a concelebrant and homilist.
