Sister M. Pierre Newman, S.S.N.D.

Sister M. Pierre Newman, S.S.N.D., who taught in the archdiocese, died Oct. 13 at Villa Assumpta in Baltimore. She was 89.

She taught kindergarten and music at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Poughkeepsie, 1948-1949. She also served in Saratoga Springs and Rochester, and in Maryland and North Carolina, as a teacher and principal. She was an educational supervisor and consultant for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Born in Baltimore, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1940 and professed final vows in 1949. She held a master's degree in elementary administration from Villanova University.

Her seven siblings included the late Sister M. Dolora, S.S.N.D. She is survived by three sisters, Catherine Frank, Doris Piasecki and Evelyn Brown, and a brother, retired Auxiliary Bishop William C. Newman of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, who celebrated her Memorial Mass Oct 17 at Villa Assumpta. Sister Pierre donated her body to science.
