Sister Margaret Joseph Gillis, O.P.

Sister Margaret Joseph Gillis, O.P., who taught and volunteered at Dominican College for more than 40 years, died Oct. 15 at St. Martin de Porres Infirmary at St. Dominic's Convent in Blauvelt. She was 95. She began teaching weekend classes at Dominican College in 1958. She became a full-time associate professor of art history in 1966 and remained a faculty member until 1996. She then spent the next six years assisting students in the continuing education program and volunteering her services at the college. She later volunteered at St. Dominic's Convent for three years until her retirement to the infirmary last year. Sister Margaret Joseph taught at the following elementary schools in the Bronx: St. Mary's, 1964-1965; Holy Spirit, 1954-1964; Our Lady of the Assumption, 1948-1954; St. Nicholas of Tolentine, 1941-1948; and St. Luke's, 1934-1941. Born in the Bronx, she entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt in 1932 and made final vows in 1938. She held a bachelor's degree in education from Fordham University and a master's in fine arts from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Weinbrecht. Among those who predeceased her was a sister, Sister Bernadita Gillis, O.P. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 19 at St. Dominic's Convent. Burial was in the sisters' cemetery.
