Sister Margaret Mary Whelan, S.C., who served as a principal and teacher in the archdiocese, died Jan. 8 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Yonkers. She was 87. Formerly known as Sister William Marie, she was principal of St. Patrick’s School, Bedford Village, 1964-1970. She was a teacher at St. Peter’s, Haverstraw, 1970-1971; Immaculate Conception, Manhattan, 1960-1964; St. Gabriel’s, the Bronx, 1949-1960; and St. Mary’s, Yonkers, 1941-1946. From 1973 until 1994, when she moved to St. Patrick’s Villa in Nanuet, she served at St. John the Evangelist, Center Moriches, as a teacher, tutor and parish outreach worker. She also served in Brooklyn and in the Bahamas. Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1940 and professed final vows in 1945. She held a bachelor’s degree from the College of Mount St. Vincent, the Bronx. She is survived by a sister, Sister Marie Julia Whalen, S.C. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 12 at Mary the Queen Convent, Yonkers, with burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
