Sister Marguerite Mahony, S.C., who taught at several elementary schools in the archdiocese and also ministered to both children and seniors as a clown, died Jan. 27 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, N.J. She was 87.

She taught at Holy Trinity School, Manhattan, 1951-1953; St. Peter’s, Yonkers, 1959-1960; Sacred Heart, Manhattan, 1961-1963; St. Mary’s, 1963-1966; and Sacred Heart, 1966-1991, both Staten Island. She also taught in Brooklyn and on Long Island.

She served in various roles at the Elizabeth Seton House of Prayer, Scarsdale, 1991-2001.

She also attended clown school and, taking the name Merry Melody, she began a “clowning ministry” entertaining both children and the elderly as part of a senior citizen clown troupe.

Born on Staten Island, she entered the Sisters of Charity in 1949 and final vows in 1956. She was formerly known as Sister Angelita Maria.

She held a bachelor’s degree in history from the College of Mount St. Vincent and a master’s in elementary education from Seton Hall University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 3 at Mary the Queen Convent in Yonkers. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery, Yonkers.
