Sister Maria Voorneveld, I.H.M.

Sister Maria Voorneveld, I.H.M., who taught at two schools in Manhattan, died March 27 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 95.

She taught in Manhattan at St. Stephen School, 1970-1974, and St. Alphonsus, 1959-1964, and at Our Lady of Mercy, Forest Hills, Queens, 1977-1981.

Over the years, Sister Maria also taught in Baltimore; Bridgeport, Conn.; New Bern, N.C.; Puerto Rico; and Peru. She served an administrator at Catholic schools in Delaware and North Carolina.

Born in Syosset, she entered the Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1945 and made final vows in 1951. She held a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s in elementary education, both from Marywood College, Scranton.

A Funeral Mass was offered April 5 at Our Lady of Peace Residence. Burial was at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
