Sister Marie Lufkin, R.S.C.J., who taught at Convent of the Sacred Heart and provided outreach to the poor at Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service, both in Manhattan, died Sept. 20 in Albany. She was 83.

She tutored adults in English as a Second Language (ESL) until early this year.

She served the poor at Little Sisters of the Assumption Family Health Service in East Harlem, 1993-2013. She taught ESL and, for many years, was the administrative assistant to the director.

She was a teacher, curriculum coordinator and guidance counselor at Convent of the Sacred Heart, a school in Manhattan, 1972-1974.

She served on the provincial leadership team for the former New York Province, 1974-1982.

She was the music director for both the school and the religious community and a teacher at Convent of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in Albany. She also served in Buffalo and in Greenwich, Conn. As assistant headmistress at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, she established a relationship between the school and the Carver Center, a community center in Port Chester. Both institutions have had a relationship of mutual exchange and support for more than 25 years.

She was an English professor and taught ESL at a women’s college in Puchon, South Korea.

Born in New York City, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1956 and made final vows in 1964. She earned a master’s degree in history and philosophy, and a bachelor’s in history, from Manhattanville College.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 28 in the chapel of Convent of the Sacred Heart in Manhattan. Burial was at the Society of the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Kenwood.
