Sister Mary Assumpta Koesters, O.P., a member of the Dominican Sisters of Hope who served as a nurse in Manhattan, died Jan. 8 at Maria-Joseph Living Care Center in Dayton, Ohio. She was 90. She was with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor Home Health agencies in the Bronx, 1955-1956, and in Manhattan, 1962-1970, and before that in Dayton and Columbus in Ohio. In 1971 she became a community health nurse and director of special clinics for Gouverneur Health Service in Manhattan, and remained in that role until 1980. She then took up a chaplaincy ministry, serving at hospitals in Ohio and later in pastoral ministry to the homebound there until retiring in 2004. Born in Carthagena, Ohio, she entered the Dominican Sisters in 1941 and professed final vows in 1946. She earned her R.N. at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Brooklyn, a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Dayton and a master’s in community health at Long Island University. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 10 at St. Aloysius Church in Celina, Ohio, with burial in a family plot there.
