Sister Mary Catherine Mooney, M.M., who served for many years in Japan and Hawaii, died July 31 at the Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care Unit of the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining. She was 80. She served in Transfiguration parish in Manhattan's Chinatown from 1958 to 1960 before being assigned to Hawaii, where she taught at Maryknoll High School in Honolulu. In 1971 she was assigned to Japan, where she studied the language and then taught in the Maryknoll High School in Yokkachi, 1973-1983. For two years she taught English in Nanjing, China, then from 1988 to 2004 she did pastoral work and taught English in Kyoto, Japan. She also held leadership positions as a Maryknoll Sister. She was on the Japan Regional Governance Board, 1974-1975 and 1979-1981, and was on the regional coordinating team, 1993-1996. Born in Waterbury, Conn., she was formerly known as Sister Maria Rafaela. She entered Maryknoll in 1952 and professed final vows in 1960. She received a bachelor's degree from Maryknoll Teachers College. She is survived by three sisters, Alice Cooper, Janice Cleveland and Velma C. Kohl. A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 3 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center with burial in the Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
