Sister Mary de Sales Murphy, O.S.U.

Sister Mary de Sales Murphy, O.S.U., a teacher and principal who also served her Ursuline community, died July 4 at the Bedford Park Community in New Rochelle. She was 90.

Her most recent assignment was community treasurer, a post she held from 1989 to 2004.

She was principal of St. Philip Neri School in the Bronx from 1955 to 1962, after which she served until 1989 at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, the Bronx, in various capacities including treasurer, teacher and bursar.

She also served as associate superior of the Bedford Park Ursuline community, 1979-1982.

Sister Mary de Sales began her teaching career at Our Lady of Mercy School, the Bronx, 1941-1952. After one year as principal at St. Jerome's School, the Bronx, she made her tertianship in Rome in 1953-1954. She then taught at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula for a year.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Ursulines in 1937 and professed final vows in 1940. She held bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University.

She is survived by a brother, James.

A Funeral Mass was offered July 8 at the Ursuline Province Center Chapel in New Rochelle, followed by burial at St. Raymond's Cemetery, the Bronx.
