Sister Mary Edward Zipf, S.C., who taught biology for 50 years at the College of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx, died Aug. 11 at Cabrini of Westchester nursing home in Dobbs Ferry. She was 84.
Sister Mary Edward taught biology at the college, 1965-2015. She also served as associate department chairperson, and later as superintendent of the college’s Science Hall. She also served as department mentor and adviser until last year.
In a letter to alumni and friends of the college, Mount St. Vincent College President Charles L. Flynn, Jr., wrote in part, “A published scholar respected in her field, she was above all a dedicated and inspirational teacher. Her students are abidingly devoted to her.”
In 1978, she was an adjunct professor at Manhattan College in the Bronx.
Sister Mary Edward taught at St. Raymond Academy for Girls, the Bronx, 1962-1965; St. Peter School, Yonkers, 1960-1961; and Holy Trinity, Manhattan, 1956-1960.
Born in Bronxville, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York in 1953 and made final vows in 1961. She held a bachelor’s degree in biology from the College of Mount St. Vincent, a master’s in biology from Fordham University and a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Maryland.
She is survived by her sister, Emily Reynolds.
A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 17 in Immaculate Conception Chapel at Mount St. Vincent College. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Yonkers.
