Sister Mary Hildegard Stockberger, R.C.D.

Sister Mary Hildegard Stockberger, R.C.D., who served as coordinator of religious education at parishes in Pearl River and Mount Vernon, died Jan. 25 at Marydell Convent in Upper Nyack. She was 85.

She was coordinator of religious education at St. Aedan’s parish, Pearl River, 1978-1993, and St. Ursula’s, Mount Vernon, 1963-1978.

More recently, she was director of the Marydell Faith and Life Center in Upper Nyack, from 1993 until her retirement from active ministry in 1999.

She earlier had served as a catechist at parishes in South Carolina, Florida and New Hampshire.

Born in Roosevelt, Long Island, she entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine in 1949 and made final vows in 1955. She held a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University and a master’s in religious education from Boston College.

She served as superior of local communities of sisters several times and also as a council member on the congregation’s leadership team.

She is survived by a sister, Lorraine Bolton. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 28 in St. Ann’s Church in Nyack.
