Sister Mary Jenkins, O.P.

Sister Mary Jenkins, O.P., who served as an educator and social worker, died Jan. 8 at St. Martin de Porres Infirmary, Blauvelt. She was 76.

Sister Mary, formerly known as Sister Amabilis, was a social worker at Cardinal McCloskey Family Services, 2000-2002; Catholic Home Bureau, 1987-1988; Catholic Charities in Manhattan, 1976-1981, and Westchester, 1981-1985; and St. Dominic’s Home, 1969-1976. She also served in social work positions in child-care facilities, hospitals and agencies outside the archdiocese.

From 2004 until her retirement last year, she assisted the Paulist Fathers at St. Paul the Apostle parish, Manhattan.

Earlier, she taught at the following schools in the Bronx: SS. Philip and James, 1956-1966; St. Luke’s, 1966-1967; and Our Lady of Victory, 1967-1968.

Born in New York City, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt in 1953 and made final vows in 1958. She held a master’s in social work from Fordham University and a doctorate in social services from Yeshiva University.

She is survived by a brother, John Jenkins, and a sister, Eileen Silo.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 13 at St. Dominic’s Convent in Blauvelt. Burial was in the convent cemetery.
