Sister Mary Josita Ryan, I.H.M., who was principal at Sacred Hearts Elementary School in Manhattan, died Dec. 29 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She was 88.

She was one of five siblings who had vocations to the religious life or priesthood.

She was principal of Sacred Hearts, 1966-1967. She served as principal and teacher at schools in the Diocese of Syracuse and in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Born in Dunmore, Pa., she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1941 and professed final vows in 1946. She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Marywood College in Scranton.

She is survived by a sister, Florence Ryan. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Father John H., Father Joseph and William, and two sisters, Sister Ann Ryan, I.H.M., and Sister Venard Ryan, I.H.M.

A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 3 at Our Lady of Peace Residence, with burial in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pa.
