Sister Mary Mercedes Gleason, P.B.V.M.

Sister Mary Mercedes Gleason, P.B.V.M., who was a teacher on Staten Island, died Jan. 15. She was 98. She taught at several parish schools on Staten Island, most recently at Our Lady Queen of Peace, 1980-1992, and St. Ann’s, 1966-1980. She taught at Our Lady Help of Christians, 1939-1940 and 1941-1949 and St. Sylvester, 1937-1938, 1949-1957 and 1964-1966. Earlier, she taught at St. Michael’s Home for Children on Staten Island, 1938-1939 and St. Paul’s, 1940-1941. She also served in offices of her congregation including novice director, 1957-1964, congregation secretary and assistant major superior. Born in Manhattan, she entered the Sisters of the Presentation in 1935 and professed final vows in 1938. She held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fordham University in the Bronx. She is survived by a sister, Mae Gleason. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 18 at the motherhouse on Staten Island, with burial in the sisters’ cemetery there.
