Sister Maryellen Smith, O.S.F.

Sister Maryellen Smith, O.S.F., who served at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin on Staten Island for 13 years, died Oct. 7 at Wartburg Campus in Mount Vernon. She was 85.

Sister Maryellen was an educator, child care supervisor and religious education catechist at Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, 1964-1977. She taught at St. Ann School, Ossining, 1977-1981; Holy Name of Jesus, New Rochelle, 1958-1960; St. Catherine, Pelham, 1955-1958; and St. Clare Academy, Hastings-on-Hudson, 1954-1955 and 1960-1964.

Sister Maryellen served on the board of directors, 1998-2004, and pastoral care staff at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, 1991-2004; was a member of the pastoral care staff at St. Agnes Hospital, White Plains, 1987-1991; and was formation director for the Sisters of St. Francis, Hastings-on-Hudson, 1984-1987. She also served in the Saratoga region.

Born in Philadelphia, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1952 and professed final vows in 1958.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University and a master’s in elementary education from the College of Staten Island.

Her sister, Patricia Finley, survives her.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 29 at Wartburg Chapel. Her cremains will be buried at a future date at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
