Sister Muriel V. Vollmer, M.M., a Maryknoll missionary who later joined the contemplative branch, died Oct. 18 at Maryknoll Residential Care unit. She

was 82. A registered nurse, Sister Muriel was a supervisor in the pediatric and maternity wards of a large hospital in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1950 until new government policies ended Maryknoll’s presence there in 1959. She studied midwifery in Ireland for two years, then served in clinics and maternity centers in Tanzania and Kenya, 1961-1969 and 1972-1975. She entered the contemplative unit at Maryknoll in 1976, and when the unit opened a cloister in northeastern Thailand in 1991 she moved there. She returned to the U.S. cloister in 1995. Born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1947 and received the religious name of Sister Mary Anthony Joseph. She professed final vows in 1953. She is survived by four sisters, Lillian Morris,

Margaret Gotchling, Kathleen Irwin and Frances Gemmell, and a brother, John. A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 23 at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, with

burial in the sisters’ cemetery.
