Sister Romaine Welch, O.C.D.

Sister Romaine Welch, O.C.D., an artist and member of the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon, died Dec. 21 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. She was 83.

Born in North Andover, Mass., she entered the Carmelite community in Concord, N.H. in 1948. She professed her final vows in 1953. In 1964 she joined the Carmelite order of Barre, Vt. The Carmelite communities of Barre, Saranac Lake and Beacon united in 2000 and she became a member of the new Carmel of the Incarnation in Beacon.

A trained and gifted artist who once said, “Beauty is my way to God,” she held a bachelor’s degree in science from Regis College in Weston, Mass.

A Funeral Mass was offered at the Carmelite Monastery in Beacon on Dec. 30. Burial followed there at St. Joachim Cemetery.
