Sister Rose Michele O’Rourke, O.P.

Sister Rose Michele O’Rourke, O.P., who was the director of religious education for 40 years at Sacred Heart parish in Monroe, died Feb. 17 in Siena Hall of the Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 81.

Sister Rose Michele served at Sacred Heart, 1978-2018. She taught at Most Precious Blood School, Walden, 1977-1978; St. Vito, Mamaroneck, 1970-1972; Cathedral High School, Manhattan, 1969-1970; St. Anthony School, the Bronx, 1968-1969; Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Middletown, 1966-1968; and St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, 1956-1958.

She also served in Queens and Hicksville.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1954 and professed final vows in 1961.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill; a master’s in library science from St. John’s University; and a master’s in religious education from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 23 in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.

A Memorial Mass was offered Feb. 25 at Sacred Heart Church.
