Sister Virginia Maxwell, O.S.U., who taught for 13 years at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, died Feb. 12 at Andrus on Hudson in Hastings-on-Hudson. She was 98.

Sister Virginia served at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, 1962-1971, 1960-1961 and 1950-1953. She was a guidance counselor at St. Frances de Chantal, the Bronx, 1992-1995, and taught at Our Lady of Mercy, the Bronx, 1957-1960, 1954-1955 and 1948-1950; St. Jerome’s, the Bronx, 1955-1957; St. Angela Merici, the Bronx, 1944-1948; Blessed Sacrament, New Rochelle, 1943-1944; and The Ursuline School, New Rochelle, 1942-1943.

Sister Virginia also worked with Project Bravo at Montefiore Medical Center, the Bronx, 1990-1991, and she was a guidance counselor for the New York City Board of Education, 1971-1986.

She also served in Maryland.

Born in the Bronx, she entered the Ursuline Order in 1938 and professed final vows in 1944.

Sister Virginia earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, and master’s degrees in applied theology from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif., and guidance counseling from Fordham University, the Bronx.

A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 15 in Ursuline Province Chapel, New Rochelle. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
