Sister Virginia Waters, F.S.P.

Sister Virginia Waters, F.S.P., a missioner to Apolo, Bolivia, for 10 years, died Jan. 24 at Cabrini Eldercare in Dobbs Ferry. She was 81.

Sister Virginia was in Apolo, 1970-1975 and 1960-1965.

She was assistant congregation minister at the congregation center in Haverstraw, 1986-1991; formation director and director of novices at Mount St. Francis, Peekskill, 1976-1982; and coordinator of motherhouse and infirmary at Mount St. Francis, 1975-1976. She taught at St. Joseph’s School, Manhattan, 1967-1970, and Sacred Heart, Highland Falls, 1966-1967.

In 2006, she received the Franciscan Federation Peacemaker Award.

Born in Hastings, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Peace in 1953 and professed final vows in 1960.

She received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Ladycliff College, Highland Falls, and a master’s in pastoral counseling from Iona College.

She is survived by her brother, Jerome Waters, and her sisters, Mary Jane Graswald, Bernadette Waters and Celeste Igoe.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 27 in the chapel at Marian Woods, Hartsdale. Burial followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Yonkers.
