Six Priests of the Archdiocese Retire

Six priests of the archdiocese have retired, effective July 1, the Cardinal’s Office announced. All had previously reached the normal priest retirement age of 75, or they will reach it at some point this year.

 

Father Edward Byrne retired as administrator of St. Ann parish, Ossining, where he served as administrator, 2013-2018, and pastor, 1995-2013. He was coordinator of Maryknoll’s priest-associate program, 1991-1995, and served as a priest associate of Maryknoll in Ojo de Agua, near Caracas, Venezuela, and in the Cochabamba Valley of Bolivia, 1985-1990. In 1991, he was temporary administrator of St. Emeric, Manhattan, and Immaculate Conception, Staten Island. He served at St. Mary’s, Grand Street, Manhattan, as parochial vicar, 1964-1978, and pastor, 1978-1985. He was ordained in 1964.

 

Msgr. Hugh Corrigan retired as administrator of Immaculate Conception, Yonkers, where he served as administrator, 2013-2018, and pastor, 1987-2013. He served as regional vicar of Yonkers, 1993-2011, and was chairman of the sociology department at Cathedral College, Douglaston, Queens, where he also served on the faculty, 1973-1987. He was parochial vicar of St. Charles Borromeo, Harlem, 1964-1973, and was assistant chaplain at Willowbrook State School, Staten Island, 1964. He was ordained in 1963 and named a monsignor in 1995.

 

Msgr. Patrick McCahill retired as parochial vicar of Our Lady of Good Counsel-St. Thomas More, Manhattan, a position he held since 2015, and as director of the archdiocesan deaf center, where he served since 1990. He served St. Elizabeth of Hungary as pastor, 1993-2015, and administrator, 1980-1993. He was assistant director of the Apostolate for the Deaf, 1969-1990, and was the recipient of the Father David Walsh Person of the Year Award from the National Catholic Office for the Deaf in 2014. He served as parochial vicar of St. Mary’s, Grand Street, Manhattan, 1968-1969. He was ordained in 1968 and named a monsignor in 1995.

 

Father John McLoughlin retired as pastor of St. Theresa’s, Briarcliff Manor, a post he held since 2012. He was assigned to St. Ursula’s, Mount Vernon, as pastor, 1998-2012, and administrator, 1997-1998. He served as pastor of Most Holy Trinity, West Point, 1994-1997, and as temporary administrator of Infant Saviour, Pine Bush, 1994. He was a U.S. Army chaplain, 1985-1988 and 1989-1994. He was parochial vicar of St. Margaret, Pearl River, 1988-1989, and Annunciation, Crestwood, 1973-1977. He taught in the Bronx at Cardinal Spellman High School, 1979-1985, and Cardinal Hayes High School, 1977-1979. He was ordained in 1973.

 

Father John Monaghan retired from the faculty of Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, where he served since 1964. He taught religion, Latin, English, communication arts, film, photography and television production. He also directed the audio/visual center and supervised the computer education program. He was administrator of Holy Name of Mary, Croton-on-Hudson, 1986, and served a summer assignment at Sacred Heart, Barrytown, following his ordination in 1963.

 

Father Arthur Welton retired as parochial vicar of St. Philip Neri, the Bronx, where he served since 2009. He was pastor of St. Francis Xavier, the Bronx, 1998-2009, and parochial vicar of Visitation, the Bronx, 1989-1998; St. Frances of Rome, the Bronx, 1985-1989; Our Lady of Mercy, Port Chester, 1980-1985; Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale, 1978-1980; Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, 1969-1978; and Immaculate Conception, Woodbourne, 1969. He was ordained in 1969.
