St. Teresa, Sacred Heart, St. Gregory Barbarigo Win Two CYO Hoop Titles

St. Teresa and Sacred Heart, both of Staten Island, and St. Gregory Barbarigo of Rockland County each won two CYO archdiocesan basketball championships at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx March 17.

Sacred Heart claimed titles in sixth-grade girls and fourth-grade boys, and St. Teresa took top honors in seventh-grade girls and sixth-grade boys. St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, won championships in eighth-grade girls and fifth-grade boys.

Eighth-grade girls — St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, beat St. Matthew-Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Hastings-on-Hudson, 34-16, behind Julia Gill’s 10 points. Kelly Tierney led St. Matthew-OLPH with seven points.

Seventh-grade girls — Nicole Melious scored 30 points as St. Teresa, Staten Island, defeated St. Stephen, Warwick, 42-36. Paige Girardi had 15 points for St. Stephen.

Sixth-grade girls — Olivia Schmitt’s 15 points led Sacred Heart, Staten Island, past St. Martin de Porres, Poughkeepsie, 44-20. For St. Martin de Porres, Simone Pelish had 12 points.

Fifth-grade girls — Julian Cinquina and Cadence Nicholas each finished with six points for St. Columbanus, Cortlandt Manor, in a 19-15 victory over St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville. Olivia Castaldo’s eight points paced St. Gregory.

Fourth-grade girls — Fione Kelleher scored 24 points, leading St. John the Evangelist, Mahopac, past St. Paul, Valley Cottage, 30-27. Riley Anderson had 10 points for St. Paul.

Third-grade girls — Heather Martinson finished with 11 pointa as St. Mary of the Assumption, Katonah, defeated St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 14-11, at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle March 11.

Eighth-grade boys — Brandon McCeesh’s 19 points helped Santa Maria, the Bronx, beat St. Catharine, Blauvelt, 48-35. Collin Conney scored 14 points for St. Catharine.

Seventh-grade boys — David Alexander scored 18 points as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, defeated St. Clare, Staten Island, 50-38. Anthony Graziano had 19 points for St. Clare.

Sixth-grade boys — St. Teresa, Staten Island, nipped St. Paul, Valley Cottage, 42-35, behind Nico Pena’s 21 points. For St. Paul, Raydell Boutin had 14 points.

Fifth-grade boys — Joe Castaldo had 16 points, to lead St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, to a 41-36 win over Sacred Heart, Staten Island. Aiden Schmitt scored 14 points for Sacred Heart.

Fourth-grade boys — Danny Mills’ 12 points led Sacred Heart, Staten Island, past St. Catharine, Blauvelt, 34-13. Ryan O’Conner, Jack Piccione and Alex Palines had three points apiece for St. Catharine.

Third-grade boys — Jack Gomez scored seven points as Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, defeated St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville, 18-13, at Mount St. Michael Academy March 11. Tyler Wein’s eight points paced St. Gregory.
