Stanley and Josie Maciocha are being recognized for a second consecutive year as the longest-married couple in the archdiocese following an annual search by the archdiocesan Family Life Office.
The Family Life Office conducts the search in concert with World Marriage Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in February, near St. Valentine’s feast day of Feb. 14.
Stanley, 98, and Josie, 100, who are parishioners of Transfiguration parish in Tarrytown, celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary Jan. 24.
The Maciochas, who were residents of the same Yonkers neighborhood, went canoeing on their first date. It was smooth sailing.
“When I met him, he was nice looking and a very nice person, and I fell in love,” Josie told CNY.
Stanley and Josie were married at St. Casimir Church in Yonkers. They have two daughters, Marilyn Gizzi and Barbara Rose; one granddaughter, Kristen Gizzi; and two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Olivia Flynn.
Stanley and Josie left Yonkers in 2016 and now live at Brightview assisted living residence in Tarrytown, where they enjoy going to the gym and playing games such as Bingo. “It’s a very nice place,” Josie said.
Alan Zale, who is a second cousin to Stanley, nominated the couple for the archdiocesan award. When Alan and his wife Joan recently visited the couple at Brightview, Stanley was watching CNN and Josie was playing Bingo.
Zale said Stanley loves reminiscing about growing up in Yonkers, and Josie enjoys talking about family and remembers all the family history.
“Josie and Stanley are both kind, gracious and generous people,” said Zale, who is a freelance photographer for Catholic New York.
“The mutual love and respect they have for each other is the key to their marriage. They are such a joy to be around.”
