A 12-2 run to start the second half lifted the Salesian High School boys’ basketball team to a 57-51 victory over Regis High School in the CHSAA intersectional B division championship game at Fordham University March 6.
Salesian trailed 20-19 at halftime.
Salesian coach John Miressi told CNY that the victory was a bit sweeter because Regis had defeated Salesian in last year’s final. “The win is a positive achievement for Salesian High School as it celebrates its 100th year anniversary.”
T.J. Chisolm scored 14 points, and Ash Sankofa and Camar Neil each contributed 11 points for Salesian, which will play Bishop Timon on Saturday, March 14 in Buffalo for the Catholic high school state championship.
Robert Camaj had 10 points, and Brayson Reyes had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for Salesian (21-6).
Fordham Prep 60, St. Edmund Prep 49—Ryan McPartlan collected 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals to help Fordham Prep capture the CHSAA intersectional A championship at Fordham University March 6.
Alex Russo and Jake Okon scored 10 points apiece for Fordham Prep (17-10), which used a 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the third quarter to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter.
Fordham Prep will meet Canisius in Buffalo Saturday, March 14 for the Catholic high school state championship.
Archbishop Stepinac High School 73, St. Raymond High School 68—R.J. Davis collected 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists as Archbishop Stepinac captured the archdiocesan championship at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx Feb. 29.
“Our guys battled and stayed together for 32 minutes,” said Stepinac coach Patrick Massaroni. “The game was played at a high level, in an unbelievable atmosphere.”
Adrian Griffin Jr. had 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocks for Archbishop Stepinac, which also received 13 points and seven rebounds from Luke Fizulich and 13 points and four rebounds from Justin Morety. Malcolm Chimezie added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Girls’ Basketball
Hailey Hospodarek scored 18 points, and Jordan Welle and Amber Abusbeih each had nine points as Moore Catholic High School beat St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, 47-41, for the city varsity A championship at the College of Staten Island March 7.
“It was a wonderful experience for our players, families and school on winning the archdiocesan championship,” said Moore Catholic coach Gene Henderson. “The support we received from everyone at Moore Catholic was unbelievable during the game. Our coaching staff and players are very grateful for that and it was why we worked so hard to achieve our goal of winning the championship.”
Moore Catholic (24-3) will compete in a Catholic high school state semifinal at Christ the King High School in Queens Friday, March 13.
Notre Dame School 40, Cristo Rey High School 20—Marie Cari finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Jade Dinkins added nine points for Notre Dame in the city varsity B championship game at St. Joseph College in Brooklyn March 8.
Notre Dame (16-6) is scheduled to play for the Catholic high school state title Saturday, March 14.
“The girls worked hard and are dedicated,” said Notre Dame coach Matt Lackmann.
Sacred Heart High School 53, Dominican Academy 45—Kyla McLean scored 34 points, including her 1,000th career varsity point, and Gabriella Sanchez contributed 10 points for Sacred Heart in the city varsity C championship game at St. Barnabas High School in the Bronx March 5.
“The girls had an incredible run at the end of the season,” said Sacred Heart coach Gina Nieves. “We were unlikely candidates to win the championship but climbed our way up from fourth place to a postseason seeding game to clinch third and ultimately to upset the one and two seeds in the semifinal and final.
“The girls are all heart and no quit, and it showed in the playoffs.”
