U.S. Attorney General William Barr spoke about religious liberty issues, among other subjects, on Cardinal Dolan’s radio show, “Conversation With Cardinal Dolan” Jan. 28 on The Catholic Channel on SiriusXM.

Barr, a practicing Catholic who attended Corpus Christi School and parish in the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan, also acknowledged the quality education he received there, a fitting reference during National Catholic Schools Week, which runs through Feb. 1.

“It was probably the most formative educational experiences of my life. And I think religious education is more important now than ever,” Barr said in the studio at the New York Catholic Center in Manhattan.

Cardinal Dolan noted the presence of Barr at the March for Life Jan. 24 in Washington, D.C. “I was so happy to see you at the march. As we passed the Justice building, who was on the balcony waving?” the cardinal said in reference to Barr, who marchers below spotted near the top floor of the Justice Department building.

The attorney general said, “I’ve made clear throughout my career that I thought Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. I think what the framers intended were for these matters to be dealt with by the state, and that there was some room for regulation of that kind of thing.

“But Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and, as Attorney General, I’m obligated to enforce the law,” Barr said.

“But right now there is a lot of litigation and debate as to how far the states can go in regulating abortion,” said Barr, adding, “that’s really where the controversies are today. And this administration has come down on the side of the states that want to impose reasonable regulations.”
