St. John-Visitation parish in the Bronx will hold a Lenten day of recollection and a Mass to mark the 39th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Oscar Romero.
St. Oscar Romero, archbishop of San Salvador, was assassinated March 24, 1980. Pope Francis canonized him in St. Peter’s Square last Oct. 14.
On Saturday, March 23, a Lenten day of recollection will be held in the lower church, led by Father Fidel Hernandez, O.A.R., a native of El Salvador stationed at Tagaste Monastery in Suffern. Father Hernandez will offer Mass in English at 12:15 p.m. A series of bilingual reflections and prayers will begin at 1 p.m. A screening of the movie “Romero” will take place at 2:30 p.m., with opportunities for confession from 4 to 5 p.m.
On Sunday, March 24, retired Auxiliary Bishop Josu Iriondo will offer a 10 a.m. Mass in Spanish. The bishop will also bless and dedicate a statue of St. Romero at the parish. After Mass, the movie “Romero” will be shown in the lower church meeting room.
