Brother Alphonse Justin Matuga, F.M.S.

Brother Alphonse Justin Matuga, F.M.S., who taught in Manhattan and the Bronx, died Dec. 12 at St. Patrick’s Home in the Bronx. He was 89.

He was a teacher at St. Ann’s Academy, Manhattan, 1944-1947, and Cardinal Hayes H.S., the Bronx, 1947-1952. He also taught at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens as well as in Wheeling, W.V., and Augusta, Ga.

He spent 41 years at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset as a science teacher and coach. He retired to Champagnat Hall in the Bronx in 2008.

Born in Wheeling, W. Va., he entered the Marist Brothers novitiate in Tyngsboro, Mass., in 1940 and professed first vows in 1942.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 17 at the chapel of Mount St. Michael Academy, the Bronx. Burial was at the Marist Brothers’ Cemetery in Esopus.
