Brother Augustine “Gus’’ Landry, F.M.S.

Brother Augustine “Gus’’ Landry, F.M.S., who served in Japan for 35 years, died Oct. 24 at De LaSalle Hall in Lincroft, N.J. He was 89.

Brother Landry was at Marist Brothers International School in Kobe, Japan, 1968-2003, as a director, teacher and board chairman. He taught at Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, 1962-1967; St. Agnes Boys High School, Manhattan, 1961-1962; and Holy Trinity, Poughkeepsie, 1958-1960.

Born in Fitchburg, Mass., he served as a first-class fireman in the U.S. Navy before entering the Marist Brothers in 1949 and professing final vows in 1956.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Marist College. In 1996, he earned an honorary doctorate from Marist for working on the construction of the college’s original buildings.

A Funeral Mass was offered Oct. 27 at the Marist Brothers Chapel in Esopus. Burial followed at Marist Brothers Cemetery in Esopus.
