Brother Charles S. O’Neil, M.M., who served in national education positions and as a principal in Chile, died on Dec. 6 at St. Teresa’s Residence in Ossining.

He was 91. His mission service in Chile began in 1955, when he was assigned to a boarding school for poor farm boys in Molina. He then was a financial assistant to Maryknoll’s regional superior in Santiago. In 1961 he was assigned to a parish in Talcahuano where he taught mathematics and religion in the parish high school and then was principal for seven years. In 1971 he became coordinator of the 13 Maryknoll schools in Chile. He also served as national treasurer of the association of private technical schools and regional vice president of private secondary schools. He returned to the United States in 1975 as Maryknoll’s internal auditor and budget director. He later was appointed principal of the Maryknoll grammar school in a Japanese-American community in Los Angeles.

Born in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Army for five years during World War II, earning the rank of first lieutenant. He graduated from St. John’s University.

He entered Maryknoll in 1948 and took his final oath as a Maryknoll Brother in 1954. A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 11 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center in Ossining. Burial was in Maryknoll Cemetery.
