Brother Conrad Timothy Burris, F.S.C., a former dean of Manhattan College's School of Engineering and founder of the college's chemical engineering department, died Feb. 9 at the Christian Brothers Home in Lincroft, N.J. He was 82. He served at Manhattan College from 1955 to 1995. He established the department of chemical engineering on the graduate and undergraduate levels, serving as professor, department chairman and dean. After his retirement in 1995, he was named professor emeritus at the school. Under his direction, the School of Engineering developed Particulate Solid Research Inc., a research institute on the college campus, which began in 1970 with support and sponsorship from leading corporate engineering firms. In 2002, alumni and friends of the Manhattan College chemical engineering department established the Brother Conrad Timothy Burris Endowment, a chemical engineering tuition and research scholarship fund. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, he professed final vows with the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1951. He held bachelor's and master's degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Alberta, and a doctorate from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. A Funeral Mass was offered Feb. 14 at the Christian Brothers Center in the Bronx, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
