Brother David Tierney, S.D.B., who taught and did tutoring in New Rochelle and Port Chester, died Jan. 28 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was 93.

He taught English at Salesian High School in New Rochelle, 1980-1981. He taught English as a second language at Holy Rosary parish in Port Chester, 1987-1988, and while in residence at the provincial house in New Rochelle, 1983-1987 and 1988-2000.

Earlier, he did office work and general chores at Salesian houses including those in Suffern, 1945-1946, and in New Rochelle, 1959-1966, where he served in the province’s vocations office. He also taught at St. Michael’s School in Goshen, 1952-1954, and was office manager at Salesian Bulletin in New Rochelle, 1949-1952.

He served at schools in Boston and in Rosemead, Calif., and tutored children in English and reading at a Salesian boys and girls club in Columbus, Ohio. He retired to the Marian Shrine at Haverstraw-Stony Point in 2000 and moved to St. Philip the Apostle Residence, the Salesians’ retirement home in Tampa, in 2004.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he immigrated to the United States as a young man and entered the Salesians in Newton, N.J., in 1942. He professed vows in 1944. He held a bachelor’s degree in English from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master’s in education from Suffolk University in Boston.

He was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters including Sisters Mary Madonna, I.H.M., Mary David, I.H.M., Mary Camille, I.H.M., and Mary Aloysius, I.H.M.

Funeral Masses were celebrated Feb. 2 at Mary Help of Christians Center in Tampa and Feb. 4 at the Marian Shrine in Haverstraw-Stony Point. Burial was at the Salesian Cemetery in Goshen.
