Brother James Gerald Francis Murray, C.F.C.

Brother James Gerald Francis Murray, C.F.C., who was a teacher and counselor at schools in Manhattan and the Bronx, died March 20 at the Wartburg assisted living facility in Mount Vernon. He was 90.

Brother Murray served at Rice High School, Harlem, 1957-1962; Sacred Heart Grammar School, Manhattan, 1953-1954; All Hallows High School, the Bronx, 1952-1953; Cardinal Farley Military Academy, Rhinecliff, 1951-1952; and St. Cecilia School, Manhattan, 1949-1951.

He also served at schools in Montana, Missouri and California, as well as in Canada, Liberia and Cote D’lvoire in West Africa.

Born in Manhattan, he entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1945 and made final vows in 1955. He held a bachelor’s degree in history from Iona College, and a master’s in vocational counseling from Fordham University.

Burial took place March 26 at the Christian Brothers Cemetery in West Park. A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date.
