Brother Joseph Dowling, M.M., who served in the Philippines for many years, died May 21 at the Assisted Living Center at Maryknoll in Ossining. He was 91.
Brother Dowling’s time in the Philippines spanned from the early 1960s until 2005, except for several years in the 1980s when he served in Philadelphia, Denver and Samoa. In the Philippines he supervised many construction projects related to Maryknoll missions.
In Samoa he taught mechanics and electrical skills; in Philadelphia and Denver he worked in Maryknoll’s development department.
Born in Ireland, he immigrated to the United States in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army for two years. He entered Maryknoll in 1958 and made final vows in 1966.
He was certified as a journeyman carpenter, and completed courses at the Institute of Automotive and Electricity in Westchester County.
He is survived by his brother, Thomas, and nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was offered May 25 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at Maryknoll Society Center. His cremated remains were placed in the Maryknoll Columbarium.
