Brother Patrick Lally, F.M.S.


Brother Patrick Lally, F.M.S., a teacher at St. Helena’s High School in the Bronx for one year, died Dec. 22 at St. Francis Hospital in Manhasset. He was 81.

Brother Lally taught at St. Helena, 1961-1962. He also taught at St. Mary’s High School, Manhasset, 1982-1995; Archbishop Molloy High School, 1966-1977, and Christ the King High School, 1965-1966, both Queens; and at schools in New Jersey, Texas and Mexico.

Born in the Bronx, he entered the Marist Brothers Novitiate in 1955 and professed final vows in 1961.

He completed his religious and academic studies at Marist College before earning a master’s degree in Spanish from Fordham University.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 29 at St. Mary’s Church in Manhasset. Burial was in the Marist Brothers Cemetery in Esopus.

May he rest in peace. Brother Patrick Maura left a legacy of violence at St Helenas, and in the 50 years since he has taught me, I can never forget his behaviour in the classroom. Granted, you could break a student's arm in the 60's and get away with it, but the memories are tough. Brother was a very poor ambassador for Christian values, but who am I to judge.
