Brother Peter J. Agnone, M.M., a Maryknoll missioner to Africa and Samoa, died April 12 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. He was 86.

He was assigned to Musoma, Tanganyika, now known as Tanzania, 1954-1965. He served at the Brothers’ Mission Unit in Western Samoa, 1975-1982. In 1995, he was assigned to Kenya, where he ministered at the Ukweli Home of Hope in Nairobi, which cares for street boys while helping them to become self-sufficient.

He was assistant to the procurator at the Procurator General’s office in Rome, Italy, 1982-1985.

He served at the Maryknoll Mission Center in Ossining, 1951-1954 and 1965-1969, and as assistant director of Mission St. Teresa’s Residence in Ossining, 1973-1975. He worked in the Brothers’ Formation Program at Kitchawan, 1987-1995.

He retired in 2003 and returned to New York. He lived at Mission St. Teresa’s Residence, where he worked in the mailroom.

Born in Winchester, Mass., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy for a year after high school. He entered the Maryknoll Society in 1947 and made final vows in 1951.

A Funeral Mass was offered April 22 at Queen of Apostles Chapel at the Maryknoll Center in Ossining. Burial was at the Maryknoll Society Cemetery.
