Brother Timothy Dermot Bray, C.F.C.

Brother Timothy Dermot Bray, C.F.C., a counselor at Iona College who had taught at schools in the archdiocese and held leadership positions in his religious community, died Nov. 5 at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. He was 71.

He had served at Iona since 1996. Previously he taught math and religion at Rice High School in Manhattan, 1994-1996; Blessed Sacrament-St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, 1987-1993; St. Cecilia’s School in Manhattan, 1983-1987; and Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island, 1972-1978.

He also taught in Schenectady and New Jersey.

From 2003 to 2005 he was a member of the Christian Brothers’ provincial leadership council.

He was the leader of the Christian Brothers community at Iona College, 2000-2003; at Msgr. Farrell, 1972-1978; and at Santa Maria Novitiate in West Park, where he also was novice master, 1979-1983.

Born in Brooklyn, he entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers (now the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America) in 1953 and professed final vows in 1964. He held a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s in pastoral counseling, both from Iona, and master’s degrees in mathematics from Manhattan College and in moral theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary in Queens.

He is survived by two sisters, Helen Eckert and Marie Lattari. A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 9 at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle. Burial was at the Christian Brothers Cemetery in West Park.
