Capuchin Parishes to Mark Feast of Blessed Solanus Casey July 29-30

The Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Mary will mark the July 30 feast of Blessed Solanus Casey, O.F.M. Cap., the Capuchin friar who was beatified last November, with Masses and other celebrations at five Capuchin parish churches in the archdiocese Sunday and Monday, July 29 and 30.

Blessed Solanus served primarily as a porter during his 53 years of priestly ministry, mainly in Detroit and in New York, including three parishes in the Archdiocese of New York: Sacred Heart, Yonkers, 1904-1918; Our Lady of Sorrows, lower Manhattan, 1918-1921; and Our Lady Queen of Angels, East Harlem, 1921-1924.

He became known for the compassion and dignity with which he treated everyone he encountered.

Blessed Solanus died on July 31, 1957.

Brother John Shento, O.F.M. Cap., executive director of communications and director of formation for the St. Mary Province, New York/New England, told CNY that Blessed Solanus’ story has resonated with a cross-section of Catholics.

“More people have contacted us because he was a healer, for the special intentions they have,” Brother Shento said. “That has increased a lot.

“Younger people seem to be attracted because he is someone who is an American. He was Irish, and that’s another whole element,” Brother Shento said.
