Catholic New York brought home eight awards, including four first-place honors, from the annual Catholic Press Association Awards competition this year.
The honors were presented at the annual awards banquet of the Catholic Media Conference held in Quebec City June 23.
The first-place honorees were:
•Cardinal Dolan, who was cited for Best Column by a bishop or archbishop for his regular column in each issue. “The strong, clear and compelling writing conveys a sense of energy,” the judges said. “Interesting topics to help guide readers through important and relevant issues. Well done.”
•Mary Ann Poust, who took first for Best Editorial on a National or International Issue (Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,001 or more) for “A Hopeful Meeting, Long in Coming” about the historic first meeting between Pope Francis and the Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill. The judges said, “In succinct narrative, the writer reminds readers what is at stake and offers hope for further collaborations.”
•Juliann DosSantos, who received top honors for Best Personality Profile in CNY’s circulation category for her piece, “Rabbi Dan, Longest-Serving Teacher,” about Rabbi Dan Wolk, who has taught for 45 years at School of the Holy Child in Rye. “This compelling account shows how the courage to integrate interfaith dialog into parochial classrooms can facilitate meaningful spiritual growth in students,” the judges said.
•Mary DiBiase Blaich, who won first for her Multiple Picture Package (Sports) for her shots of the CYO Cheerleading Competition. “Great job by the photographer to get up close and personal to tell the story,” the judges said.
In other honors, a team from Catholic New York (editor in chief John Woods and reporters Juliann DosSantos and Dan Pietrafesa) took second for Best Coverage of Mother Teresa’s Canonization, and a second team (news editor Christie L. Chicoine, plus Mrs. DosSantos and Woods) received third-place honors for Best Coverage of the Year of Mercy.
CNY also took second for Best Media Kit Created in 2016 for “Digital Media Kit 2017” by advertising and business manager Matt Schiller, production manager Leah Bossio and staff.
Schiller was also received honorable mention in the Best Scenic, Still-Life or Weather Photo category for a picture of a group of Sisters of Life in the blustery conditions at last year’s March for Life in Washington, D.C.
Ms. DiBiase Blaich also received honors for two other CNY photography assignments she entered as a freelance member of the association. One was a first-place honor for Best Photo Story (Sports) at a “Summer Olympics Sports Day” organized by Transfiguration School in Chinatown. The other was an honorable-mention citation for Best Portrait Photography for a photo of a Franciscan Sister of the Renewal making her final vows.
