Deacon Abraham Santiago

Deacon Abraham Santiago, who served at St. Joseph’s parish in Yonkers for 31 years, died Oct. 7. He was 90.

Deacon Santiago, who was assigned to St. Joseph’s since his ordination to the permanent diaconate by Cardinal John O’Connor in 1988, faithfully participated in the sacramental and liturgical life of the parish. He also served on the diaconate advisory council in 1990.

Born in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, he earned an associate’s degree in education from the University of Puerto Rico. He served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard where he received an honorable discharge.

His wife, Angela, and children, Carlos, Gloria and Angel, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 11 at St. Joseph’s Church. Retired Auxiliary Bishop Josu Iriondo was the principal celebrant and homilist. Burial was in Ascension Cemetery, Airmont.
