Deacon Albert Loeffler

Deacon Albert Loeffler, who served at St. Joseph’s parish in Middletown for 20 years, died Dec. 5. He was 89.

Deacon Loeffler was ordained to the permanent diaconate by Cardinal Edward Egan at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 2000. He was active in the parish’s sacramental and liturgical life. He was involved in evangelization, visits to shut-ins and hospital ministry. He was a faithful minister of the word, altar and charity.

Born in Baltimore, he served in the U.S. Navy, 1950-1954. He retired as a mental health aide from the Middletown Psychiatric Center.

His children, Albert Loeffler, Susan Ancona, Eileen Purdy, David Loeffler, Christopher Loeffler, Laura Werthmann and Mary Loeffler; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Sobczynski, survive him. 

His wife of 62 years, Mary, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Benedetto, predeceased him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 11 at St. Joseph’s Church. Auxiliary Bishop Gerardo Colacicco was the principal celebrant and Father Trevor Nicholls delivered the homily. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Seminary.
