Deacon Anthony J. Mercandetti, who served at St. Bartholomew's parish in Yonkers, died Oct. 31 at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. He was 59. Ordained June 6, 1998, Deacon Mercandetti had served at the parish since then. "He was well loved by the community, and we will all miss him," said Father Anthony Bassey, M.S.P., pastor of St. Bartholomew's, in an interview. "He was always there when we had parish functions, like Family Mass, Confirmation and first Communion," Father Bassey said. "He also was a dedicated member of the Holy Name Society at the parish. At meetings he would give a wonderful spiritual reflection. It was always inspiring." From 2001 to 2005 Deacon Mercandetti worked in finance at the archdiocese, where he was accounting manager of the Department of Education. Previously he was comptroller of Yonkers Raceway and worked for Pinkerton Security. A Yonkers resident, he studied for the diaconate at St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie. He was born in New York City and held a bachelor's degree in accounting from Fordham University. He is survived by his wife, Rosaria; his mother, Fede Mercandetti; two sons, Anthony Jr. and Paul; and two daughters, Pia Rivera and Teresa Schulenburg. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 4 at St. Bartholomew's Church, with burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
