Deacon Cecil Kenefick

Deacon Cecil Kenefick, who served for 11 years at St. Theresa’s parish in Briarcliff Manor, died Oct. 5. He was 86.

Deacon Kenefick was assigned to St. Theresa’s, 2003-2014. He was involved in the spiritual and sacramental life of the parish as well as visiting the sick in hospitals, nursing homes and homebound. He was ordained to the permanent diaconate by Cardinal Edward Egan in 2003.

Born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Baruch College, Manhattan, and was a tax accountant for Praxair, Danbury, Conn., for 45 years until retiring in 2004.

His wife, Rita Kenefick; son Brendan; daughter Elaine Rubin; brother Michael; and four grandchildren survive him.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 8 at St. Margaret of Antioch Church, Pearl River. Retired Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Walsh was the principal celebrant and Father John McLoughlin, retired pastor of St. Theresa’s, delivered the homily. Burial was at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont.
