Deacon George C. McGowan, who served for 31 years at Visitation parish in the Bronx, died June 12. He was 79. Deacon McGowan was a retired supervisor for the New York City Parks Department. While working in that capacity, he was able to place many seminarians of St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie in summer jobs. He was also devoted to the youth of Visitation parish as well as other members of the community. His duties included visiting area nursing homes and hospitals. Born in Manhattan, he was reared in the Bronx and attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn. He was a sergeant first class in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1951. Deacon McGowan, who was not married, was ordained to the permanent diaconate by Cardinal Terence Cooke in St. Patrick's Cathedral on June 19, 1976. A Funeral Mass was offered June 16 at Visitation Church. Burial was on June 18 in Knollwood Cemetery in Canton, Mass.
