Deacon John Simpson

Deacon John Simpson, who served at St. Benedict's parish in the Bronx, died Feb. 5 at St. Patrick's Home in the Bronx. He was 87. Auxiliary Bishop Robert A. Brucato, vicar general and a former pastor of St. Benedict's, celebrated the Funeral Mass Feb. 10 at the church. Deacon John Murphy, who also had served at the parish, was the homilist. Deacon Simpson was in charge of the Legion of Mary at St. Benedict's and performed liturgical duties at the parish until he retired from active ministry several years ago. He was ordained a deacon in 1988, after retiring as a senior petroleum economist for Citibank, N.A. He held bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University and was a staff sergeant and radar operator in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
