Deacon Steven Neier, C.O., was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon for the New York Oratory of St. Philip Neri by Auxiliary Bishop James Massa, rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack July 17.

His ordination as a transitional deacon in formation for the priesthood is the first for the Oratorians in the United States. Deacon Neier, 42, was raised in Queens where he is a graduate of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Academy and a graduate of Archbishop Molloy High School.

Deacon Neier, one of four children of Bruce and Patty Neier, earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in secondary education from St. John’s University in 2002 and started his career as a Catholic school teacher in the Diocese of Brooklyn. He later received master’s degrees in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington and in school building leadership from St. John’s.
