Deacon Roberto Fernandez, who served two parishes in the Bronx, died May 10 in Mount Dora, Fla. He was 91.

Deacon Fernandez served at Holy Cross parish following ordination and later served at St. Raymond.

Born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, he was ordained by Cardinal Terence Cooke at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1979.

He was a teacher and assistant principal in New York, and also taught Braille and sign language and served as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.

His sons, Roberto and Israel; daughters, Yolanda Rosa and Anita Torres; and their younger sister, Axneiz Vega, survive him. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive him. His wife, Delia, predeceased him.
Burial will be in St. Raymond Cemetery, the Bronx. A Memorial Mass will be scheduled at a later date.
