Deacon Walter M. Brady, who served at St. John and St. Mary parish in Chappaqua, died Aug. 28. He was 85.
At St. John and St. Mary, he was involved in the liturgical and sacramental life of the parish. He was engaged in hospital, prison and homebound ministries, as well as the soup kitchen and food pantry, youth and young adult groups, religious education, marriage counseling and prayer ministries.
During the winters, he served at a parish in Sarasota, Fla.
Deacon Brady was ordained to the permanent diaconate by Cardinal Edward Egan in 2004.
He played professional baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization before starting a long career with New York Life, working in ascending roles, including executive officer. He retired in 1998.
Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. John’s University on an athletic scholarship, playing baseball and basketball. He graduated with a major in English.
Deacon Brady is survived by his wife, Dorothy; six children, Karen, Walter, Daniel, Matthew, Gilbert and Douglas; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
His children said in a statement, “Our father was passionate about his Catholic faith. He lived a life built in service to others and spreading the Good Word.”
Due to the pandemic, funeral services were private.
