Eight Priests Receive Reappointments

Eights priests, including six senior priests who have already reached the normal retirement age of 75, have been reappointed to their positions, the Cardinal’s Office has announced. The reappointments were effective July 1.

Also, Father James Garisto was appointed to the faculty of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, Staten Island.

Father Edward Byrne, a senior priest, has been reappointed administrator at St. Ann’s, Ossining, a post he has held since 2013. He had served as pastor of St. Ann’s, 1995-2013. He was coordinator of Maryknoll’s priest-associate program, 1991-1995, and served as a priest-associate of Maryknoll in Ojo de Agua, near Caracas, Venezuela, and in the Cochabamba Valley of Bolivia, 1985-1990. In 1991, he was temporary administrator of Immaculate Conception, Staten Island, and St. Emeric’s, Manhattan. He served at St. Mary’s, Grand Street, Manhattan, first as parochial vicar, 1964-1978, and then as pastor, 1978-1985. He was ordained in 1964. 

Msgr. Hugh Corrigan, a senior priest, has been reappointed administrator at Immaculate Conception (St. Mary’s), Yonkers, a post he has held since 2013. He had served as pastor of Immaculate Conception, 1987-2013. He was regional vicar of Yonkers, 1993-2011. He served as chairman of the sociology department at Cathedral College, Douglaston, where he was a faculty member, 1973-1987. He served as parochial vicar of St. Charles Borromeo parish, Harlem, 1964-1973, and was assistant chaplain of Willowbrook State School, Staten Island, summer 1964. He was ordained in 1963 and named a monsignor in 1995.

Father John J. Lynch, a senior priest, has been reappointed administrator of Immaculate Conception, Woodbourne, a post he has held since 2014. He was pastor of Immaculate Conception, 1996-2014, and St. Sylvia’s, Tivoli, 1988-1989. He was parochial vicar of St. Joachim’s, Beacon, 1990-1996; St. Mary of the Assumption, Katonah, 1981-1988; St. Mary Star of the Sea, City Island, 1971-1981; and St. Gabriel’s, New Rochelle, 1965-1971. He was ordained in 1965. 

Father John Monaghan, a senior priest since 2013, has been reappointed as a faculty member of Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx. He has served on the faculty there since 1964, teaching religion, Latin, English, communications arts, film, photography and television production; directed the audio/visual center; and oversaw the computer education program. He was administrator of Holy Name of Mary parish, Croton-on-Hudson, for five months in 1986. He also served a summer assignment at Sacred Heart, Barrytown, after his ordination in 1963.

Father Francis Principe, a senior priest since 2002, has been reappointed to the faculty of Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx. He has taught at Cardinal Spellman since 1981. He served at Wagner College, Staten Island, 1980-1981; Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, 1959-1980; and City College, 1954-1958. He was parochial vicar at St. Joseph’s, New Rochelle, and Basilica of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Manhattan. He was ordained in 1953.  

Msgr. J. Christopher Maloney, who is now a senior priest, has been reappointed administrator of St. John the Baptist-Most Holy Trinity in Yonkers, a post he has held since 2015. He served as pastor of St. John the Baptist, 2003-2015. He was pastor of Notre Dame, Manhattan, 1988-2003, and was Catholic chaplain at Columbia University during that time. He was priest secretary to Cardinal O’Connor, 1985-1988. He served on the faculty at Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1977-1985. He was a religion teacher and chairman of the religion department at Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, 1968-1977, and taught religion at John S. Burke Catholic High School, Goshen, 1967-1968. He was named a monsignor in 1990. 

Father Robert Morris has been appointed to his second term as pastor of St. Bernard’s, White Plains, a post he has held since 2010. He served St. Bernard’s as administrator, 2009-2010, and parochial vicar, 2006-2009. He was parochial vicar at Annunciation, Crestwood, 2004-2006.  He was ordained in 2004.

Father Peter Popovich has been reappointed to his fourth term as pastor of Our Lady of Shkodra, Hartsdale, a post he has held since 1998. He served the Albanian parish as administrator, 1993-1998. He also served at the former Our Lady of Good Counsel Albanian Catholic Center in the Bronx. He was parochial vicar of Our Lady of Shkodra, Greenburgh, 1989-1993, and St. Lucy’s, the Bronx, 1985-1989. He was ordained in 1985.  

Father James Garisto, who most recently served as administrator of St. Adalbert-St. Roch, Staten Island, has been appointed to the faculty of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, Staten Island. He was administrator of St. Adalbert’s, Staten Island, 2014-2015. He was pastor of St. Peter’s, Poughkeepsie, 1998-2014. He also served on the faculty of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, 1990-1998. He was parochial vicar at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Staten Island, 1983-1990, and St. Clare’s, 1982-1983, and St. Lucy’s, 1979-1982, both in the Bronx. He was ordained for the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1977 and incardinated into the archdiocese in 1983.
