Far-Flung Anger

Posted

Mark Pattison’s article in CNY’s Aug. 2 issue concerning abuse revelations in the Catholic Church contains very relatable quotes from John Carr, director of the Initiative of Catholic Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. Carr describes being appalled, angry, ashamed and betrayed by the revelations—apparently, especially those surrounding former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

I identify with all of those sentiments and feelings. My anger wanders as it vacillates from focusing on the criminal violators to the enablers who refused to adequately address the horrific decadence. Our Church seems to perpetuate the appearance of being dependent on outside sources to smack it in the face and make it recognize that it has wandered from Christ’s commission.
